COMMUTING TO PSU:    Host families live in various parts of Portland, which covers a large area. Though we understand your desire to live close to PSU, we feel that a 60 minute commute is reasonable. If you must live less than 30 minutes from PSU,  please do not apply. Instead, try a dorm or apartment.

FAMILY SIZE: FOCUS host families are single people, married couples or parents with children. Many host families host 2 or more students at the same time. On your application you can tell us your preferences, and depending on available, we will try to match them.

ACCOMMODATIONS: You will be provided a private furnished bedroom. You may or may not have your own bathroom. Since you will be living family style, you should feel free to use the living room, family room, kitchen, and dining room since this is where you will interact with other family members.

SHARING THE EXPERIENCE WITH A FRIEND: Some families have two or more rooms available for international students.  Sometimes we can place friends together upon request. If you choose this option the fee will be reduced if you share a room.

LAUNDRY AND ROOM UPKEEP: Your family will expect you to do your own laundry, keep your bedroom and bathroom clean and clean up after yourself if you use the kitchen or other shared spaces. You should also be willing to help with some of the jobs around the house or yard, such as carrying in groceries, putting away clean dishes and clearing the table. If you are interested in cooking, whether you are male or female, your host family may welcome an offer from you to help plan and prepare some meals for the family.

HOMESTAY AGREEMENT AND EMERGENCY INFORMATION: It is important that you talk about and agree upon the details of the homestay: price, responsibilities, expectations, etc. And in case of a medical emergency, it is important that the host family have the information they need to get you medical help and contact your family, if needed. Please look at the sample Homestay Residency Agreement and Emergency Contact Information. This form can help as you talk about the details of your homestay. You  should keep a copy of the completed agreement for reference.
