ADVANTAGES OF A LONG-TERM HOMESTAY: A homestay with an American family provides an opportunity for you to experience life in the United States from a more authentic perspective than you would get in a dormitory or an apartment. It involves living with a family, sharing the evening meal with them most days (or at least some days if you choose the “breakfast only” option) and spending some time on weekends with them. It’s a great way to make friends, practice English and learn about American culture!
TIME WITH THE FAMILY: If your main goal is to learn English, try to schedule your time so that you can spend at least part of the evening and weekend with your host family and join in their activities. Keep in mind that the host family wants to include you and enjoy your company just as much as you want to be included. If the family has children involved in sports, you may want to attend some of their sporting events. You can also volunteer to help with grocery shopping, cooking, yard work or other household tasks. This gives you a chance to develop your relationship with the family and to learn about American customs.
EATING WITH THE FAMILY: It is definitely advisable to eat with the family, since the evening meal is when most American families spend time together discussing the day’s events.
I you choose to plan and prepare your own meals you will undoubtedly spend a lot more on food and a lot more time and effort buying and preparing it and cleaning up after yourself.
Most American families go out to eat occasionally. If you join them, you might be expected to pay your share of the bill. This should be discussed in advance. The family may need to be out of town occasionally and would make arrangements with you regarding your meals during their time away.
